Cooking
Cooking brings us together
Cooking for today's weather.
Cooking aint no chore.
Cooking aint no bore.
Cooking is a meditation.
Cooking is a manifestation.
Cooking is an alchemy.
Cooking without vanity.
Cooking because I'm trying to get healthy.
Cooking because I'm trying to save money.
Down here on the ground with some good food and good company
The following is a draft of a speech I did on why we should cook more.
I was going to delete this part as this is the poetry side of my website, but I thought I’d leave it in here as a sweet treat. On that note, I delivered a final version of this speech while demonstrating how to make guacamole.
Call me an alchemist, as this speech will be my attempt to turn shit into gold. I'm going to be talking about alchemy. Turning nothing into something. But that's an archaic term, let's bring it to modernity. I'm talking about cooking, the modern day alchemy. So let's get cooking. Now let's get cooking.
First let's talk about what cooking is all about. There are some common stigmas that people end up attacking, which ends up freaking people out from picking up a spoon. I'll address these stigmas by not telling you to change up your diet, by not telling you to stop balling out with take out, and by not telling you to give up your time to cook. I'm simply here to preach the joys of cooking, and persuade you to get into the kitchen even though I know some people can't stand the heat.
So allow me to cool off the stoves, and let's begin by thinking that cooking is a meditation. Sherry Yard, a master pie maker, said it best during a workshop I attended: (I don't have pie batter because I don't like pie, so I'm just going to replace this action with some guacamole I made.) "When you’re in the kitchen and you’re cooking, it’s just you and the food. You don’t need to worry about anything else because the food demands your attention. But the food isn’t angry, it isn’t happy, it just is. You realize as you stir the batter, your mind is being stirred with it. Next thing you know you’re in hypnotic, yet transient state. It’s at that moment where cooking becomes as meditative as breathing.
If meditation isn't your forte, and patience is your problem -- it's all good. It's important to know that cooking takes time -- duh. But what most people don't know is that it's just like any practice. It's one of those activities that could only get better and easier over time. I'm not talking about thyme with rhyme, I'm talking time.
Time is money right? Well I'm not here to tell you stop balling out with take out, but I will tell you is that you can ball out on some groceries and have yourself a buffet plate, or a nice leftover plate to wake up after a long night of partying, or to come home to after a long day of hard work.
I like Mickey D's like any another fast food born baby of America. Sausage McMuffins are my favorite. For me, I think they're the ideal road trip meal. But I aint talkin about road trips right now; I'm not going any where but the kitchen!
